If the neighbor's laptop is 20 feet lower elevation it would be outside

If so, it would be interesting to just tip the omni a couple of degrees
in the direction of the neighbors house and bring the laptop into the
plane of high gain.<br><br>

You mentioned that with a laptop you could get the signal about half way
between the two houses. If that's a hundred feet away from a relatively
high gain antenna on the roof, while you're on the gound, you may be well
underneath the strongest signal. Up on the neighbor's roof at about the
same level as the first antenna, it's quite possible that the signal
would be better than on the ground half way between the houses and maybe
you wouldn't need a highly directional antenna. You might be able to use
say an 8 dbi omni

configured as a repeater, which might cover the neighbor's yard pretty
well, and at least some of the house underneath the antenna.<br>
Though if you want to extend coverage with addional device(s) inside his
house, it'd make sense to think in terms of bridges, as Fred

If you decide to use devices in bridged mode, and a directional antenna
on the neighbor's house, I've been satisfied with this model of a 15 dbi

I've used this one at 24 dbi and been happy with the results<br>

but wouldn't recommend it for your purpose, it's not easily to mount
effectively (it catches a lot of wind and is hard to secure) and would be
overkill.<br>
If you find an omni doesn't do the trick, a Yagi like the MAXRAD WISP
Series 15 dBi might be worth considering if the neighbor's AP is
configured as a repeater and you want one antenna there that will both
get through the intervening trees and also provide pretty good coverage
in the vicinity of the neighbor's house. Those Yagis provide surprisingly
decent signal all around themselves in addition to their main beam. I've
found them for about $50-$65<br>
