marina networks. If you can point that dish at shilshole, we
could tie you in there. But if you can.see the westin, we
can get you on a much faster link as well as give you public ip's.
I think you are the guy who raised the blue tarp flag. Am I right?

Yep.
Thanks for the offer of the wireless links. I expect the Shilshole link
would have the same problem it had the day we tried it, a couple of years
ago. Neither of us is high enough off the water for the link to be clear of
the bigger ships. The interruptions when they pass hose up VPN connections.
I'm still trying to spot the Westin through the haze and the trees, but I
don't see anything that yells "I'm the Westin" to me. Our view of downtown
is slowly disappearing as the trees grow.
Back when I could only get ISDN, and it cost $300/mo, I really wanted to do
something like this, to have a Seattle-side wireless partner who could
connect me to the Internet. Now, however, I have a good, fast DSL
connection with a static IP, so the complication of a long-haul wireless
link is tough to justify.
BTW, and FWIW, my son's IBM laptop will pick up your signal from Shilshole
without an external antenna or anything. It almost always works from the
main floor of the house, and occasionally from the bar down in the basement.
My Fujitsu laptop doesn't see it at all.

as for your sons laptop. he probably just has a good card, and we have
high gain antennas with very sensitive radios. if he has a wireless
card with a good recieve sensitivity, its probably the reason for his
connection. my question of if you could see the westin was asked cuz
we have some great wireless solutions that will compete with T1's on
up. for 300 bucks we could get you set up on a 2mb/2mb wireless link.
It operates on 5.8 and has 128 bit AES encryption. With a good link it
is capable of 9-10 mbits symmetrical, and we'd be throttling you down
from there, not like DSL where you could see up to 1.5mbits, and your
speed is determined by how far away you are from the nearest hub.

Just thought I'd give the option. If you can get a digital picture of
your view, I can see if I see it. Next would be to do a site survey.
I'm not a huge fan of DSL so I'd say if we can get a link to you, to
throw away your DSL. That might sound crazy for someone on Bainbridge
island who has waited many years for the option of DSL but , heh, we
are all so spoiled over here ;)
Have a great day. Ciao for now
