Putting up some Dx-style nodes in Southern California (yes, California.) Goal is to link up local nodes and tunnel to other communities via conventional connections. Anyone up in Seattle with a major node interested in tunneling, just leave a note below. Probably won't be for a while yet - still gathering components right now...
Update: It's two years later (March 2005), and I'm finally getting everything together. I have a dozen APs to put into service (4 are 802.11b units from the last two years of experimenting, the rest are 802.11g, recently purchased), and am testing configuration, security etc. I'm standardizing on the DLink 524s (because that's what was on sale). Next thing is to purchase or fabricate antennas for omni and directional links. I haven't decided whether to purchase dedicated bridges (expensive), or to use a USB client, hook that into my linux box, and use that as the bridge.
In case anyone is wondering, this effort has nothing to do with socalwireless.net, socalwireless.org, or socalwireless.com (I've got to come up with a new name.)
I'll put up more information as stuff happens. Also on tap - getting a car-based client/AP working.
For passers-by that are wondering what is "tunneling", take a look at IpTunnel and possibly GatewayHowTo
