Looking for free wireless Internet or fileserver access? This page is where we list the active public points of presence for the SeattleWireless project. While it is a bit of work to add a new node, it's generally easy to go sit at a cafe or a bus stop and get on one of our existing nodes (network access points). If you have problems getting connected, you might check out the "How Do I GetStarted?" section in the FAQ located at FrequentlyAskedQuestions. Of course, you can also get online for free at nodes that have nothing to do with SeattleWireless. A partial listing of these non-SeattleWireless access points are on the PublicAccessPointsThatWeDontRun page.

Steps to Access SeattleWireless network 802.11b nodes
1. All the current nodes of the SeattleWireless network are built on the WiFi 802.11b standard. Of course, this could change in the future, but things are simple now
You will need a computer with a working 802.11b wireless network card and appropriate drivers. The manual that comes with the card should help you with the next steps.
2. Put yourself within range of a working node. This page is here to help you find one. Note that we are a volunteer service, there is no promise that a given node is always working. Also consider that weather, the card you use, and the antenna you use all determine how far away from the node you can get signal.
3. Set your wireless card SSID to "seattlewireless" (no caps, no quotes). This is the name of the SeattleWireless network and is your way of knowing that a particular access point is intended for public use. Note: Some nodes use a variant of this SSID. If your wireless software shows an available AP (not a peer to peer connection!)with "seattlewireless" or "SWN" in its SSID string, you may assume it is part of the SeattleWireless public network.
4. Set your computer to use DHCP to get the IP Address and other essential information. Some nodes require other steps, read below.
The FrequentlyAskedQuestions also has a section on How To Get Started which has info on specific items to do if the above steps are not enough reminder.

Please keep this list up to date, including status. If your node is testing or you willing to commit to a deployment date, then list it here. It is only going to have confusion to list non-working nodes, so please remove your node from this list if it quits working. This is also a good place to move a node to if it is going to be down for more than 24 hours.
