Wap11 Ver22 Un Hack

Use this to go back to WAP11 firmware after applying the Wap11Ver22Hack which changed it to D-Link DWL-900AP+ firmware.

All necessary files/instructions at http://www.andrewhakman.dhs.org/wap11/ver22/dlink%20to%20linksys/

The firmware file in the archive there is broken. For whatever reason I can't hex edit it to change the values, and re-zip it back up again and every have it work. You just have to download the linksys (or other OEM) firmware directly, hex edit it on your machine, and then upload it. This also allows the procedure to work to go back to any OEM's original firmware without having to generate specific file packages for each OEM. The instructions are here.

Disclaimer: This solution will downgrade your WAP11 to an old version of firmware. Use with caution.

Background: I build a wireless bridge using 2 WAP11s (v2.2). Worked perfectly out of the box by turning both to wireless bridge mode, or one in AP mode and the other in wireless client mode.

Problem: Everything broke after upgraded both WAP11s to official Linksys firmware (1.1). Either packet would drop, or routes would be "forgotten" randomly. Could not find old LinkSys firmware on their website to fix WAP11s

Solution: After playing around with the "WAP11 to DLink DWL-900 AP+" hack, I discovered that I could downgrade LinkSys WAP11 by using the rom.img included in alloem_to_linksys.zip.

Steps: By the way, I think you can ignore the dreaded "Checksum Error" when uploading "d-link_to_linksys-nml.bin" in D-Link web page if you are in process to convert your WAP11 to original condition.

To downgrade your WAP11s from 1.1 firmware, just TFTP the included rom.img to your WAP11. I used the TFTP client included with Windows XP using the command:

tftp -i wap_11_ip_address put rom.img

When the command finish, you will receive a successful message. Wait until your WAP11 stops blinking and reboot it using the power cord. This will downgrade your WAP11 to 1.009. This probably means that it has all the bugs and "features" of the older firmware, use with caution. So far, my wireless bridge seems to be working perfectly for the past 48 hrs with 10+ gigs of data through its system.

I had to downgrade my WAP11 v2.2 because the official Linksys firmware is very b0rk3n.

Steps:

  1. Download alloem_to_linksys.zip.

  2. Delete everything but rom.img because you don't need it.

  3. Unplug the router.
  4. Plug the ethernet into the PC/laptop that you're going to use.
  5. Plug in the router.
  6. At the Windows XP command line:
    • c:\> tftp router_ip

      tftp> verbose

      tftp> bin

      tftp> trace

      tftp> put rom.img

  7. Wait for it to finish. The last packet will take a while because the router will program itself (fast blinking green light).
  8. When everything seems normal, unplug the router.
  9. Wait 1 minute. Really. Go get a drink or something.
  10. Plug it back in.
  11. Wait again. For me it rebooted a lot before it started working again. Again, just wait. If you have XP, you'll notice cable disconnected/connected messages. For me it took about five minutes -- I'd completely given up and was planning to buy a new (less stressful) router.

  12. When things settle down, try using a browser to look at the router config. If it's good and you see Firmware version 1.009 on the setup page, then Yay!

  13. If not, try rebooting with the reset button held in. Again, wait until things settle down and check the config page.
