Hello, I'm Startide Rising. I don't have a DenaliCycle, but I kind of want one.

If the name looks familiar, it might be from posts in various web forums or Usenet. My wireless experience started out with using Ricochet (Metricom) wireless modems way back in 1999 (early adopter). Aerie Networks took over the Metricom/Ricochet technology but has not resumed much operation in areas outside of Denver (Colorado) and San Diego (California) in the years that they have ownership. They have reduced the price to $24.99/month so it is too bad it is not in Seattle.

I use Senao NL-2511CD Plus EXT2 and SL-2511CD Plus type 802.11b cards as described at SenaoCard. One card has a built-in antenna and another uses an external antenna connected by one of two mmcx connectors on the card. The mmcx connectors are female type. The cards were purchased from Surf and Sip Network at www.surfandsip.com for $85. Since then, the prices have declined quite a bit as other effective alternatives became available. I also use the Hawking Technology HWU54D USB2.0 version which has 22~23 dBm of transmit power with an built-in 6dB gain antenna. Amusingly, the HWU54D cost less than the Senao and has the versatility of being located at the end of a easily-repositionable USB cable.

One concern about 802.11 wireless transmitters is the amount of microwave frequency electromagnetic radiation they emit. A number of studies have shown that this microwave broadcasting can affect human tissues. An example is in the Seattle P-I newspaper via: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/cell01.shtml
