Back in the day, Sputnik was the ultimate hotspot creation CD. You simply popped the CD into a computer with a compatable wireless card and wired network connection to make an access point. This provided users of HTTP with a challenge to be met whenever they first tried to browse the internet.
Sputnik had it's problems, sure, and it was superseeded by better products, but, it was still a pioneering piece of software. Sputnik was a landmark event in the early days of WiFi.
This, unfortunatly, was not enough to save this classic piece of coding from the hangmans noose and sputnik.com went all comercial on us. The communist name and free-for-all attitude where all but forgotten. Users of Sputnik branded products now had to pay fees and include their souls with any mail in rebate vouchers they may be diligant enough to return. The world changed for the worst.
The Sputnik Community Gateway was removed from the internet and people started to forget.
Luckily, for the purposes of retro chick, explanatory examples of bootable CDs, and, the demonstration of community spirit, I myself am hosting a very rare .ISO.
