More information about the Denali is HERE. It's a shame that there aren't more websites on this discontinued product. The Denalic cycle company seems to have moved on to building electric bikes that look like motocross bikes, so you would definitely get pulled over by police for not having a motorbike license plate.
the folks at electricmoto are pushing the envelope on electric bikes. the blade goes 45mph and has 18.5 horsepower. it's more likely that you would get pulled over for speeding
With the astounding advances in affordable rechargeable NiMH batteries, people have been making up their own power packs in nice small packages. NiMH weighs far less than the old lead-acid cells. Even AA-sized NiMH cells are up to 2200 mAH each now! The older 1800 mAH cells are priced at 60-pack for $54.95 each. Large cells suitable for electric bikes are available. A 10-pack of 4000 mAH NiMH solder-tab cells is $22.99. The 8000 mAH cells are 4-pack for $31.40 so this is more pricey than using the 4000 mAH and ganging them up in two parallel strings. If you can make use of power in 12V increments, a premade 12V pack with charger is $35.
The hawker lead acid batteries were not picked for weight, but because you can charge them fast and drain them fast. NiMH and many of the new battery technologies out there require more time to charge, and cannot handle the quick draw that a vehicle requires. there is a forum on electricmoto that has a bunch of EV makers fighting over batteries, motors, and design. Definitely worth a read if you're into buying or making an electric bike. also, if you're looking for parts, check out http://evparts.com/ (located in port townsend)
Sam's Club used to sell a pedal-able electric bike for under $400 but alas sales were too slow so they stopped carrying it.
