Hello, I am Daniel Marsh and I talk about myself in the third person, a lot
I have been interested in wireless networking in different forms for around a decade. My first exposure to wireless networking was through ham radio. I became very interested in packet radio and ran a 2m packet radio BBS until an unfortunate accident with some egg nog on new years eve fried my gear. My next exposure to wireless networking was the (now semi-defunct) Ricochet network, a unique project that supplied reliable, modem speed internet access in a number of metropolitan areas. I finally got my exposure to 802.11 gear while pursuing a Physics degree at University of Puget Sound. The school owned a number of homes around the periphery of the campus, but could not run cable or fiber to the homes, so the emerging Wavelan gear looked to be a decent solution. One of the IT guys knew of my interest in wireless gear and handed me a number of large cardboard boxes filled with 802.11 (not b) gear. I played around with the gear for a few months, but the school utimately decided to not go wireless because they didn't believe that wireless technology was "going anywhere."
My first exposure to SWN came through Bobby Morreti, who was performing nebulous tasks for Matt W as part of his high school senior project. As I am graduate of the same program, he and a number of his friends used me as an "expert editor" for their projects. While most of them have since graduated and moved on, I have continued to attend meetings and make a general nuisance of myself.
I have contributed to SWN and the Wiki in a few limited ways:
- I run a public node in Bellevue that covers a fair ammount of the south end of Woodridge Hill. It currently runs off a n Orinoco RG-1100 AP that has been flashed into a AP500 and hooked up to a 8 db patch pannel. I am hoping that with a Senao based AP and a high gain pannel that I will be able to provide coverage to the Loehman's Plaza area of Factoria.
- I have authored a number of articles on the wiki including:
A DIY guide to constructing a 12-15 db directional CookieCantenna
A guide on how to set up a Windows VPN to provide protection from prying eyes while using public access points
A write-up of FieldDayFlying, a part of this year's Field Day events
A write-up/blog of my never-ending wireless CarPuter project
