Access Point (aka 'AP') - A device that allows wireless clients to communicate with each other and, usually, with other wireless or wired networks. Some AccessPoints operate as network bridges, some act as routers. Common examples of AccessPoint hardware include Apple Computer's AirPort series, the LinksysWap11, and the LucentAccessPoint.

Access Points operate in InfrastructureMode (aka BSS mode).

How about some detailed instructions on using a software AP? I have a working Cisco Aironet AIR-PCI352 but I be damned if I can get it to work as an AP under RH Linux 7.2 (kernel 2.4.18). It works as far as ping goes inside my net, but that's it. So, what I'm asking for is the ip routing/masq part I guess...(lonewf@hotmail.com)

The HostAP utils don't work on the Aironet cards. You need something with the Prism2 chipset.

And orinoco cards?

uh, not that I could find:

The Orinoco Linux Driver is "one driver to bind them all" and can operate all three of these:
