Posted by NathanA: Some badly-behaved APs out there inappropriately send Probe Response frames to every Probe Request (even ones that do not contain their SSID or the broadcast SSID), and some badly-behaved clients blindly accept these bad responses and end up associating to the wrong AP. Together, these "defective" APs and clients create a phenomenon which I have dubbed Association Hijacking. Some manufacturers have been pleasant to work with during this entire ordeal, some are just starting to come around and fix their defective products, and yet others are unfortunately uncooperative (the big culprit here, in my mind, is Proxim/Agere.
Please feel free to post information about other defective APs and clients you have found here on this Wiki, or updates on fixes being released for known-defective products. Perhaps we can collectively put some pressure on the manufacturers to bring their products into conformity with the specifications they claim to be writing for.
