The dwl800ap+ is a wireless access point and repeater

The dwl810+ is a wireless bridge

With a slight modification (2 bytes changed) to the 810 firmware (version 1.90b2) you can turn the 800 into an 810 wireless bridge.

Hi guys,

I modified the actual 2.00 Firmwares of both for you, and it worked perfectly for me! (H/W rev A1) Download here:

DWL800AP+ to DWL810+ DWL810+ to DWL800AP+

Have fun with the Files and take a look at Vallstedt Networks!

I tryed it out and it worked nicely. I however needed my dwl-800ap+ back, so I played a little with the firmware and fixed that...

Here is the mod for the dwl800AP+_firmware_200.bin:

You have to change two bytes as in the mod for dwl-800ap+ to dwl-810+.

From this line:

000DFFF0

20 20 20 20 20 2D 32 31

00 00 00 00 2B BA 71 C2

-21....+.q.

to this:

000DFFF0

20 20 20 20 20 2D 32 30

00 00 00 00 2B BA 71 C3

-20....+.q.

And then flash it to your dwl-810+ to get a dwl-800ap+. Should work on legit dwl-810+ too...

I dont have an account on this wiki. If you have further questions or want a tested firmware (The one I used), you can reach me at this address: dermoth at aei dot ca.

Oct 30 2004, I ordered 2 of the DWL800AP+ from compgeeks.com at $26.50, Both were H/W Ver B2, they flash back and forth no problem using the v2.0 firmware above. -The_Bhagwan, Seattle

DWL-800AP+ Rev B and B2

The modified 810+ firmware (dwl810+_firmware_190b2.bin) worked perfectly on my DWL-800AP+ Rev B (H/W Ver B2; F/W 1.7). -Anon

I tried the v2.0 firmware (dwl800ap+_to_dwl810+.bin) on my B-revision 800. Worked fine. I also went to the DLink website and compared the firmware for the A and B version DWL-800AP+s; the V2.00 firmware is byte-for-byte identical. So I guess that the 810+ firmware, like the 800AP+ firmware, should work as well on the A as the B versions. -colin (same as below)

Rev A1 Hardware Caveats

Before you rush out and buy a bunch of these, be aware that many of the deals come with the A1 hardware, not the more recent B2 hardware. So what, since they use the same software?

Well, the A1 hardware seems more sensitive to the AP used. In particular, an AP running a Prism 2 chipset with FreeBSD 4.9 doesn't work (i.e. m0n0wall), though the same equipment running Linux (Pebble) does. If anyone else has info, I'd appreciate it...

Hardware Power Hack

I did the hack located here (The thread says it's for the Dwl-900ap+ Rev. C , but it's done on the GL2422MP Mini-PCI card itself, so the AP hardware doesn't matter) by soldering pin 12 of the 2820 chip to ground (it was 0.89v before, which made the 2820 reduce its output signal by about 7db). Result: Power output is now ~22dbm (15dbm is the default), which is near the limit of the amplifier chip. This procedure can be done in 10 mins by someone with good soldering skill, but note that a mistake will probably kill the output of your card, making it - and the AP - useless. There are other hacks involving the BIAS line, but those require changing a microscopic resistor (which is very difficult to do: it's 2mm long) and seem to offer the same result. Note that this modification will probably make the amp generate much more heat, so you may want to do as I did and cut open the top of the box and put in a small 5v fan to cool everything down. - colin / WifiWinnipeg.

Questions

Q: Would it be possible to use the 2.10 firmware on a hacked 810+? And second, I've read somewhere that usually the difference in 802.11b and g hardware is the firmware. Is this true? and if it is would it be possible to hack the 810+ to the g810?

A: I think it would be possible to use the 2.10 firmware on a 800-to-810 hacked device, but I haven't tested it yet. Someone below said it worked, so you could risk it. You may need to change some bytes of the 2.10 firmware (a bit like the procedure above) to have the device accept it. Also, that "the 11b and 11g difference is in the firmware" is complete BS, 11g requires much more advanced radio and amplifier circuitry than 11b. You could "incapacitate" a 11g product into a 11b only one, but that would be less worth it that just using 11b hardware, so no one would do it. So if you want to get a g810, send your $$$ going to Dlink. -colin / WifiWinnipeg

Q: Has anyone tried loading the G810 firmware on an 810? Rob

A: Rob, no one has tried it and it wouldn't work anyways - the G810 firmware is made for/requires 54mbit (11G) cards, which the 810 doesn't have (it has only 22mbit). And there's probably other differences between the g810 and 810 that the firmware would expect too (the g810 would have a newer on-board CPU to handle the faster G speeds, etc). -colin

Q: Has anyone tried the DWL900+ firmware on an 810?

A: I don't know of any attemps to load the 900 firmware on 800/810 hardware, and from my research a while ago it probably wouldn't work - board design/ICs were too different, or different flash sizes. -colin

Q: I use hacked 800ap+ in EU, but I have only 11 channels -FCC regulatory domain. I need ap to work on 13 channel -possible with ETSI regulatory domain. But there is no options to change it. The firmware from EU Dlink site is identical and nothing have changed after update. Does somebody know how to change it? KS

A: (no one has any answers, probably the firmware is hard-set to 11-channel FCC domain)

newer 2.10 firmware on a hacked 800+

was the one for me to get things going (at least with wep enabled), so first dwl800ap+_to_dwl810+.bin and then ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/dwl810%2B/Firmware/dwl810%2B_firmware_210.bin did OK for me (rev.B DWL-800AP+)
