SeattleWirelessVoIP FAQ

Can I replace my home telephone service with SeattleWirelessVoIP

SeattleWirelessVoIP is not a telephone replacement service and does not interconnect with PSTN or other telephone network systems. While users are free to setup inbound gateways and possibly outbound PSTN dialing, it is not officially part of this service. You cannot make emergency calls on this network. There is no 911 service available.

Then what will SeattleWirelessVoIP do?

SeattleWirelessVoIP provides the ability to register and proxy voice data services within the Internet and SeattleWireless network. It consists of several VoIP servers peered in an ad-hoc fashion. No guarrenteed level of service is provided.

Can anyone join?

Yes. Right now, its a one-off for adding users, but an automated system or form will be available soon.

Who can I call?

Other SeattleWireless members, non-members on the service, other community wireless network members, etc.

Can I pick my number?

Sure, assign yourself a number within the SwnvPhoneBook and contact someone to add you to the asterisk server.

Can my Community Wireless Network connect to SeattleWireless VoIP?

Yes, we can provide IAX or SIP connections to your CWN VoIP server or even provide full VoIP services to a limited extent, such as operating as a registrar service for SIP clients. Please contact someone working on the SeattleWirelessVoIP project.

Has someone setup inbound numbers?

Yes, local access numbers have been setup in 360, 253, 425, and 206 area codes. Check out SwnvInbound

Can I map my own inbound PSTN number?

Perhaps, just ask and we may be able to help you out.

Can I make Outbound PSTN calls?

Outbound PSTN minutes cost money. Unless these minutes are donated to the project (which we do accept gifted funds to purchase wholesale minutes or will accept an IAX/SIP relationship to terminate these minutes), we will not be offering these for general usage. We may enable such functionality for special events such as field day, etc. Anyone is welcome to offer such a system within SeattleWirelessVoIP

What about 800 calls? Aren't those free?

As a courtesy, 800 outbound dialing is made possible through IAXTel. As long as IAXTel continues to offer free outbound 800 service (this includes 800, 888, 877, and 866 destinations in the US), we will too. If it stops, or breaks, it will go away.
