I live in Ballard and work at NPower, a non-profit technology company. I'm currently building an ASP for the non-profit world.
I just moved in to 2432 NW 63rd, which can see Trinity and a whole lot of North Queen Anne, Magnolia, and Ballard. Pictures to follow.
Received my OrinocoRg1100 and Lucent / Orinoco Gold (Agere) on 6/11. After trips to Radio Shack (no love), Radar Electric, and QFC, I built two Yubantennas on 6/11. I got a 0.5 mile link up and tested on 6/12.
The test link was from my office to a spot on the Fremont side of the ship canal about 0.5 miles away. The shot was 100% over water. On the building, I mounted the antenna on a tripod. At the other end, I placed the antenna in my bike helmet resting in my pannier. With a bit of helmet tuning, I was able to connect to my work network via my iPAQ. Without precise aiming, it shouldn't be a surprise that I couldn't get more than 2 Mbps.
Another tuning issue: the copper wire in my waveguide antenna was not heavy guage. The connectors I got from Radar were a bit funky (for $1 each, you can't complain.) I couldn't get a good solder between the heavy guage copper wire and the connector, so I stripped some solid core cat 5 and inserted that into the connector. I can't believe it worked at all. Next step is to get the hacksaw going and attach a nice piece of heavy guage copper.
My goal is to get a link set up between my home and my office as a proof of concept (and to get free Internet access), but I'd love to extend the SeattleWireless network after that.
