I have spent over 10 years as an expert in the wireless/wireline industry. I've done ventures, strategy, sat on boards, built and sold startups and managed million dollar network deployments. At Bellcore/Telcordia I worked on the 'enhanced services' side of caller ID/voicemail/email/Unified Messaging, etc. Built several VOIP based enhanced services capable networks. At Logica/CMG I was wireless SMS/MMS expert as well focusing on mCommerce apps.
I believe the wireless industry risks becoming commoditized the same way the wireline is with flat rate voice billing if they do not following the following 11 rules. Please write me email if you have comments.
PHYLLIS' 11 RULES OF WIRELESS INDUSTRY 1. 3G is dead stop all network buildout for 2.5G or 3G networks 2. WIFI/Wider WIFI is the Next Trillion Dollar Market IF AND ONLY IF THEY keep the transaction (per transaction) billing model in tact rather than pricing flat rate per mobile session. 3. WAP is officially dead 4. MMS is still 2 years out , Biggest app for MMS is music/video not pictures 5. SMS is the quickest route to ARPU increase for wireless carriers (TV Voting and interactivity/community best SMS app) 6. LAST MILE WILL BE WIRELESS (combination of WIFI for short range and point to multipoint fixed) (not fiber, not dsl) 7. WIFI is the sleeper technology that will infiltrate homes and enterprised with 50% saturation in 2 years APP driving WIFI is entertainment while traveling, Email while away from home, and enterprise VPN connectivity while in home or other locations 8. BUSINESS Case for WIFI is purely DSL play with volume centers (airports, mass transit, truck stops etc.) and cafes/rest. later 9. Carrier Business case for WIFI is ADSL pull thru revenues and 3G Data network pullthru revenues period end of story (doesn't matter if you lose money on WIFI, must generate more DSL or 3G lines of business or else not worth doing 10. Spectrum and FCC gov. manipulation less important than funding and speed to market in next phase of wireless industry. 11. HIDDEN SECRET: PSTN Right of Way thru Payphones + WIFI + Wider WIFI is the new telecomm infrastructure of next century and billing/backoffice managed thru Mobile IP will be the ultimate new carrier of next century (RBOC Killer)
