Note: "the WAP11's come (so far) in several discernable flavors; version 1.0 and 1.1. The differences are minor, but in a pretty important way -- the 1.0 hardware has 2 megabits if flash, and the 1.1 hardware has 4 megabits of flash" Update 9/2/2002: There is now a version 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 hardware. I don't have info other than to say that there are newer versions. Update 9/12/2002: The WAP11 2.2 uses the Texas Instruments TI ACX100 chipset giving it the ability to do 22 Mbps. Same chipset D-Link is using in its DlinkDwl650Plus and US Robotics new 22 Mbps equipment. To turn on 22 Mbps, log into your WAP11 v2.2 and change the page to /weca.htm.

I have a couple of WAP 11 Version 2.2's and in my crude testing against my WAP 11 V. 1.1 I noticed a big difference in power ouput.

The first thing I noticed was the claim on the side of the box where Linksys states that the new WAP 11 V. 2.2 has a factory setting of 20 dbi (100 mw) so it would appear that Linksys has heard the crys of most folks that there units were a little under powered at the old setting of 30 mw.

This is good news for most of us who dont want to spend time with tweaking our equipment to get our sites up and running.

My test with the new unit (V. 2.2) allowed me to double my effective range and penetrate 2 additional block walls over the older unit (V. 1.1), useing stock antennas with both units setting in the same position (I did say this was a crude test).

WAP-11 v2.6 does not have MCX connectors/PCcard inside. Antenna jumpers are soldered right to the board so if you're doing external antenna(s), have to stick with the external RP-TNC and a little bit of signal loss or desolder and DIY. :)

I just received two WAP11 ver2.6 access points and have it up and running in bridge mode. One thing I noted is the ethernet LAN connection on these boxes support 10 Mbps and do not support 100 Mbps. This really doesn't limit the maximum throughput of 5.5 Mbps but it can cause other system problems. I'm running a 10/100 hub with all 100 Mbps devices attached until I attached the WAP11. Now that the WAP11 is running 10 Mbps, all the devices on the hub are running at 10 Mbps. Time to start looking for a switch to replace my hub.

I have built a wlan around our local town using Netgear ME102 APs and same as clients. Then I bought 6 Linksys WAP11 2.2 APs. As soon as I started installing them things went downhill. The network slowed to a crawl and eventually stopped. It turned out the Linksys APs where flooding the network with hundreds (thousands?) of duplicate packets. The bridging code is broken. This is especially bad with WAP11s in client mode. In bridge mode they are OK (so far). I have tried Linksys firmware 1.01f and 1.1 and D-Link firmware up to 2.56 - no better. Luckily I have just found some DLink DWL900AP (not +) Atmel chipset same as the ME102 and original WAP11 so the 2.2s are getting scrapped (after three weeks). DON'T BUY THEM !! Has anyone has solved this problem???
