I recently put together an waterproof access point that uses PowerOverEthernet (PoE). This is the page that documents how I did it. Thanks to John Adams for his very easy instructions on how to make PowerOverEthernet equipment, which is here: JnaPoe.
Items I Used:
DLink DWL-900AP AccessPoint ($59 from http://www.techdepot.com)
- Electrician's Box ($5 display model from Home Depot)
- 2 Dual RJ45 Surface Mount Jacks ($7 each from Radio Shack)
- Male and Female electrical jacks that fit the DWL-900AP ($4 from Radio Shack)
- 1 long ethernet cable, 2 one-foot ones ($14 from local computer shop)
- Various screws ($1 from Home Depot)
- Electrical tape ($1 from Home Depot)
- Heatshrink tubing ($2 from Radio Shack)
- Screen Savior religious screen saver cd ($2 from Goodwill)
Total = $102
Here are a couple of shots of the elecrical box from the outside: This electrician's box was excellent, because it's waterproof, could fit a few AP's inside, mounts on a wall, and has a spot to put a padlock if you need it.
