Capitol Hill is the neighborhood just east of downtown Seattle, Washington. The name comes from the Capitolene of imperial Rome, in Seattle for the digs of the local Robber Barons of the 19th c. It is now one of the densest residential neighborhoods in the city, with a healthy mixture of apartment blocks, small streetside shops, CoffeeHouses and residential housing. It is famous for diversity even though property values and rent increase every year.

The main street is BroadWay (of the poetic "My Posse's on Broadway" fame).

The Capitol Hill neighborhoods were a center of controversy and conflict between protesters, residents, and the police during the WTO protests in 1999. (Tear gas was extensively deployed (pdf) on Broadway, creating anger among local residents.)

The combination of density, a hilltop location, and a relatively large geek population make Capitol Hill an ideal starting place for SeattleWireless. (Also, the founders happen to live there.) Unfortunately, there is virtually no parking space available for non-residents, so driving there and looking for a place to park is an adventure in itself.

HackNight currently meets weekly in the area. See the HackNight page or EventCalendar for the current location.

There are a lot of nodes on CapitolHill, including coverage in two parks.

The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce maintains several maps of the area on their Web site, including an ``interactive map'' with streets, landmarks, parking, Flexcar, bus and bike information.
